Supported Artists

SLAP is committed to supporting artists based in York and Yorkshire. The artists that we are working with in 2020 - 21 are:

JK

Working across the North, jk are a performance duo made up of Jack and Kylie. With backgrounds in sonic and visual art, they create immersive off-the-cuff shows with an emphasis on participation. Accessible and absurd, their work often has narratives of ritual and religion, characterising mad leaders committing surreal actions. Since their inception in summer 2019, jk have performed regularly at venues across Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool.

"Somewhere between Emmerdale and Spitting Image” Freddie Hayes is a Yorkshire based puppeteer, maker and performer. As a fringe focused performer, the subjects of her work generally involve garish characters in human and puppet form. Her work continues to test the boundaries of puppetry by placing its traditional form into unusual contexts.

Closed Forum

Closed Forum are a collective of artists that specialise in digital interactive experiences that put audiences at the heart of their work. Their performances, games, experiments and experiences look mainly at anxiety, dreams and reality. For the last year Closed Forum have been making interactive artworks blending art and gaming. Now in light of the global pandemic, works about Anxiety and Isolation are more relevant than ever before.

Ashley Marshall

Ashley's work focuses upon the deconstruction of narrative theory, telling stories of those who have influenced him and those he has met in his life. His work often involves a great deal of personal narrative and reflection on his own life bringing a working-class drive to his work. Exploring the relationship between text and performance, Ashley creates work that seeks to question the relationship of authorship.
