About The Programme

During 2020 SLAP switched focus from creating live events and festivals, to focusing on supporting emerging artists throughout the pandemic. Artist development has always been a core value for SLAP and is our main passion. We have worked to bring together 11 creative organisations in York, to develop an artist incubation programme for emerging artists that are based in the local region and create live performance work. This project will support 6 emerging artists or companies to develop both their artistic practise and their business knowledge. This will be done by creating a bespoke package of support, that will continue for a year.

We are currently inviting individual artists and companies living in the YO postcode area and surrounding areas to apply to be a part of the programme. Each successful artist or company will receive a year of tailored support from SLAP and will be awarded one of the six commissions listed below.

Each successful applicant will receive:

  • A year of producing support from SLAP

  • 6 training sessions covering a wide range of areas that are essential to being a working artist

  • £1000 bursary

  • Production budget

  • Tailored photoshoot to create high quality marketing images

  • Creative commission

  • Two weeks residency space - at one of our partner venues

  • Opportunities to deliver workshops

  • Use of a City Centre office space

  • Performance Date - at one of our partner venues

  • Documentation of your live performance

This project has been made possible with the support of the following organisations: Arts Council England, Accessible Arts & Media, Explore Libraries and Archives Mutual Limited, Guild of Media Arts, Kaizen Arts CIC, Make It York, Mediale, York Museums Trust, York Music Venue Network, York St John University, York Theatre Royal and Yorkshire Dance.

*Notes on Emerging

SLAP strongly believes that emerging does not just include artists that are aged 16-25 or have just graduated. Emerging can include people of any age that have just started a career in the arts. Emerging can be self defined, it can include artists that have been creating work for a while but have not had the opportunity to receive support, commissions or touring opportunities.

*Notes on Live

SLAP believes that 'Live Performance' includes any art form that happens live in some way, this is defined by the artist and the work that they create.

The Commissions

  • What Could Accessible Theatre Look Like?

A commission for a disabled artist to create a piece of work around the question -

‘What does Inclusive Theatre mean to you?’

This question is just a starting point and can be interpreted and explored in a way that is appropriate for the artist's creative practise. We welcome experimental approaches and the testing of new ideas.

This commission is in collaboration with Accessible Arts and Media and York Theatre Royal. The artist will have the opportunity to host creative sessions with Accessible Arts and Media Participants, explore and test ideas as part of a two week residency at the York Theatre Royal and receive mentoring and advice from members of York Theatre Royal’s Artistic Team.

The artist will share the work that has been developed in November 2022 at the York Theatre Royal Studio Theatre.

  • Community Driven Performance

York St John University invites an artist or company to create a performance work, event or activity that engages an audience or community. This could be the student community or a local, national, or global community.

Although York St John University is providing the Creative Centre as a venue for a performance this does not have to be used for this project outcome, particularly if it is not suitable for the artistic form or approach.

The selected artist or company will be supported throughout the creative process to create a community led model for touring the work and future funding and development opportunities.

  • Performance Reimagined: How Can Technology Create New Performance Experiences?

In partnership with Kaizen Arts CIC and Guild of Media Art, this commission is for an artist / company that would like to explore how performance makers can untilise technology in new ways to create new performance experiences. This could be anything from utilising mobile technology to create intimate performance to large scale immersive experiences.

This is not a residency for creating live streamed performance, it is a residency to completely reimagine how a live stream could work. We are excited for the supported artist to test out new ideas, try new things and unlock new ideas on what live performance could look like.

The artist will be in residence at Brew York SPACE and will have access to mentoring and support from the production team at York Mediale. The outcome of the research and residency will be presented as part of York Design Week 2022.

  • Throwing Shapes

York Music Venues Network in partnership with Yorkshire Dance would like to commission a dance artist/company or an artist/company that is interested in utilising movement in performance, to develop a work inspired by the connection between people that live music creates.

There is a rich history of social, anarchic and euphoric dancing being born when groups of people gather to enjoy music together.

The artist will be in residence at a selection of venues that make up the York Music Venue Network and will have the opportunity to look into the archives, taking inspiration from the subcultures that are born and created in local music venues. Recontextualising the gig space as contemporary performance space.

The final performance will take place at the The Crescent Community Venue, the selected artist will be supported by SLAP to adapt the work for other venues and spaces.

  • Stories in Time and Space

Visual art has always been closely associated with storytelling. In Western culture, painting and sculpture initially evolved to illuminate narratives of religion, patronage, and power.

To celebrate this dynamic, York Art Gallery is inviting a writer/performer to develop stories responding to specific exhibitions: The Yorkshire Tea Ceremony or Pictures of the Floating World, which will be performed in time and space — on Gallery. We wish to support engaging performances that celebrate the rich historical relationship between literature, drama and art, signalling the diverse interpretive potential that lies within each object on display. Via performances tailored toward Family Audiences, the aim of the residency and performance work created is geared toward connecting with the stories found on Gallery in a new way, introducing a diverse approach to the ‘Arts’ as an important communication tool and a vehicle for self-expression and discovery, opening up the performing arts as a creative outlet for visitors and families.

  • Big City Read

York’s Big City Read is an annual event where 5000 copies of a chosen book are distributed across the city. York Explore invite the people of York to read the book and participate in a range of events and activities.

This commission invites an artist or company to create a performance adaptation of the chosen work, developed in residence and performed at an Explore location in York.

The aim of the residency and performance work created is to help audiences connect with the stories found in books in a new way. The text is to be used as a starting point, the final performance does not have to be a retelling of the story, it could be a performative action inspired by the text or an intimate experience with one of the characters. This is an opportunity to experiment with the form of adaptation.

The selected company will be supported by SLAP to create a touring model for the work that can visit other libraries.
